HWNT_FW Shows Face

By Christina Elbitar

General Meeting Recap

6/17/09

Amidst the beautiful backdrop of the TCCD Trinity River Campus, Dr. Tahita Fulkerson and Dr. Robert Munoz welcomed our Fabulous FW Chapter as we courageously entered the Social Media Network. Our technologically equipped meeting room faced no challenge for our techies. The projector screen dropped, the lights dimmed and the show began.

Cindy Olivera with MStrategies provided the expert direction our chapter needed to navigate the unfamiliar. With her guidance, the FW chapter realized the importance of putting their best face forward in any Social Media ring. Statistics prove that Hispanas of all ages play a role in social media networks. We know the game…speak English and Spanish, dance country and salsa, so…rock your Twitter means rock your Twittero, too. BRING IT ON!

Pat Alva-Green demystified the perils of posting a resume online. Keeping it professional not personal is key to a successful LinkedIn profile. It is a one stop shop for many industries as they search for new talent. Take it from Cindy, updating her LinkedIn resume landed her job with M Strategies.

Twitter is no match for FWLatina, also known as Eva Bonilla, when it comes to tweeting on her Iphone. Follow her on Twitter and her tweets will amaze you. Not only can she accomplish what she does in 24 hours but she showed us how she can also text it in less than 140 characters. Her loyal followers include the likes of Sonia Sotomayor, LaTeen, and our own Zamzoe.

The final face off came as I shared how to stay connected with the world and manage life in one easy and fun place with Facebook. I talk to friends, share my love for HWNT, and connect with Chadra customers all while seated in my tiny office. Be my friend and I will be yours.

HWNT_FW knows how to put on a happy face in any place. Where’s your face?

05.28.2009 – (FORT WORTH, Texas – May 20, 2009) The Hispanic Women’s Network of Texas - Fort Worth (HWNT-FW) chapter awarded $123,000 in scholarships to nine local students at the organization’s annual Mother-Daughter Awards Banquet held at Tarrant County College’s south campus on May 2, 2009. The announcement comes after all nine of the applicants met the program requirements while maintaining excellent attendance rates at the organization’s annual Latinas In Progress (LIP) college prep modules.

Every year, HWNT-FW raises over $100,000 in scholarships to females who are set to graduate from a Fort Worth-area high school and who have attended all five of the organization’s LIP modules. The LIP modules are set programs that HWNT organizes each year to help prepare students for college and acquire skills to further their professional development. Each module is organized to prepare students for college, develop their writing and speaking skills, as well as provide public policy and life coaching sessions to help each student become more confident and an outstanding citizen to their communities.

“We have been blessed in these trying times to be able to provide guidance and support to improve the lives of our Fort Worth youth,” said Christina Elbitar, president of HWNT-FW. “Acquiring an education is core to our organization’s mission and success. Each of our members and donors have been working so hard to volunteer their time and increase our ability to help make a huge impact in the lives of our LIP students who, otherwise, may not be so fortunate.”

Each of the recipients received scholarship amounts ranging from $1,000-$113,000 in individual awards to several local major universities including a full ride to Texas Christian University, as well as opportunities from The University of North Texas, The University of Texas at Arlington, Texas Wesleyan University, Texas Woman’s University and Tarrant County College District. In addition to area-university and a Northwestern Mutual donation, HWNT members presented awards in honor of their mothers.

The 2009 recipients of the nine HWNT scholarships awarded in May are:

Christina Elbitar/HWNT president, Clara Garcia/HWNT TCU scholarship recipient, Jennifer Treviño/HWNT scholarship chair, and Michael Marshall/ TCU

We look forward in watching all of our recipients as they begin their new life journeys.”

HWNT FW Chapter: Remembering our mother, Mary Holguin Alva

Mary Holguin Alva

Mother of Pat Alva Green

When the Fort Worth Chapter of the Hispanic Women’s Network of Texas honored their Latinas In Progress students, Patricia Alva Green honored the life of her mother.

Mary Holguin Alva was born and raised in El Paso, TX. Mary lived a life of laughter, love and adventure. Always willing to try to something new, she learned from her experiences and readily encouraged others to “step out”. Her dynamic personality lit up a room and people loved to be around her. Mary was a wonderful mom, loving wife, supportive sister and a loyal friend. Her many friends looked to her for advice and encouragement. She cared deeply, gave generously and lived life fully. She raised five like-minded children. As a stay at home mom, Mary was very involved with her children’s activities. She became a second mom to many of her children’s friends. Mary always advised those around her to enjoy life and make the most of it. Mary certainly did.

Darcee Torres of Paschal High School won the $1,000 Mary Holguin Alva scholarship at the HWNT FW Mother Daughter Banquet.

HWNT Dallas Chapter- March 2009 General Membership Meeting Summary

June 7th, 2009

Our second General Membership Meeting was held on Tuesday, March 17th at Capriccio’s Ristorante.  After a short presentation by our Chair about our mission and initiatives, we proceeded to have a short presentation by both of the organizations that are being evaluated as part of our new Women in Need Initiative.  The objective is to partner with one of these organizations in order to help their clients to improve their lives.

Lynn Berman, Executive Director of Attitudes & Attires, presented the organization’s mission and their need for help as they strive to help disadvantaged women rediscover their value and worth.   Following Lynn, Jan Edgar Langbein, Executive Director for The Genesis Women’s Shelter, presented the Genesis Women’s Shelter’s mission and their need for spanish workshops to help these women in need.  She stated that Hispanic Texans, like the general population, have both a limited definition of domestic violence and have a willingness to blame victims for the abuse they suffer.

Based on these presentations, HWNT Dallas Chapter Members voted and the decision was made to partner with the Genesis Women’s Shelter  to assist women impacted by current social issues.  Genesis serves a high concentration of Hispanic women.  The W.I.N. initiative will assist Hispanic women coming to Genesis by providing them with educational workshops in Spanish.  These workshops will vary from self-esteem, job seeking, and financial planning to legal issues.

We concluded our meeting with a valuable presentation from Annie Daub, President & CEO of Make Rain Co. about Career Makeover Strategies, an important topic in this challenging economy as we strive to stay competitive in this marketplace or even if we are considering a career change!
