Vivid and Hasta La Luna

11x 16

By Julie Alzaitoun

Vivid reminds her of the colorful beauty of Mexico. Color, art, and culture are always celebrated even in remote villages.

Hasta La Luna was shot on Puerto Vallarta’s malecon. It represents the confidence in our children to shoot for the moon with the right support and education.

Artist Biography: My passion for photography began in the late 90’s when I moved to Mexico! I lived in an awesome fishing village known as Puerto Vallarta! Back then it was not as popular of a tourist area as it is today. I lived there for 2 years teaching scuba diving. That was the life…hanging out at the beach …learning spanish..and doing what I LOVE most of all..SCUBA DIVING! I took so many photographs of the people and town of Vallarta…it became a real passion for me. The lifestyle there was so completely different from the states. I felt like I wanted to capture every moment and memory on film! When I moved back to the states I continued my passion for photography by photographing the most memorable day in a persons life! Whether its a graduating senior awaiting their new life, a bride’s wedding day or the birth of a new baby…I want to be there to document it for you!!!

Visit her new studio in Roanoke, Texas.

Many thanks to Julie Alzaitoun for donating two pieces to help HWNT mentor and provide scholarships for our Latinas In Progress students.

HWNT VIP Sneak Peek: Ellie Ivanova

HWNT Celebrates Latina Art 2009

A VIP SNEAK PEEK at a piece from

the upcoming Latina Art Show

My Soul in a Basket

7 x 9.5 framed

By Ellie Ivanova

Roses carry a rich symbolism as images - they stand for love and
heartache, beauty and thorny resilience. In this small basket, some
roses are fresh while others have faded, just like a person’s soul is
in a constant renewal of memories, emotions and motivations: some
stay, others go away. Instead of expressing sadness for what we have
lost, the intention behind this image is to inspire hope and desire to
move ahead and grow.

http://parasolphotography.smugmug.com.

Artist Biography: Ellie Ivanova lives in Texas now, but she is deeply connected with Latin America, where she has lived and worked.  Her literary articles have appeared in various scholarly journals. She also writes art critique and cultural analysis for local and international art and culture magazines. She currently works on an teacher-training project for bilingual education.

As a photographer, she is interested in the visual representation of cultural space and its people. Her art has been shown at the Fort Worth Community Art Center, Laura Moore Gallery and Berry Street Art Gallery in Fort Worth. It is part of the art collection of the
Independent Bank in McKinney, TX.

Many thanks to Ellie Ivanova for donating this piece to help HWNT mentor and provide scholarships for our Latinas In Progress students.

HWNT VIP Sneak Peek: Hatziel Flores

HWNT Celebrates Latina Art 2009

A VIP SNEAK PEEK at a piece from

the upcoming Latina Art Show

Calm before Storm

24 x 36 on canvas

By Hatziel Flores

This piece reflects the self preparation that one has to endure to be strong for the troubles that we face day by day, choosing to take it head on with bravery. The bee hive shapes represent Hard work and the power to Rebuild for a brand new clean start.

Artist Biography: His journey began at the age of 4, while playing under the dining table, his mother presented him with a piece of paper and a pencil. Astonished by what can be created with those two means, his interest began to grow. At the age of 14, bored by what was taught in art school, he started to look for another outlet of creativity. He was introduced into the Hip Hop culture and started to get involved with Graffiti. This became an extremely important element for him. Graffiti has helped him express himself through his art in a more freely. He became acquainted with different kinds of art mediums and started to evolve his visions. Today he incorporates Urban Techniques to a Surreal art form, giving him a finished product of an edgy Modern Surrealism. Up until this day there are no limit to his visions.
Many thanks to Hatziel Flores an artist from Dallas for donating this piece to help HWNT mentor and provide scholarships to our Latinas In Progress students.

Strengths Finder Recap

Disney says that everything is magic in the Magical Kingdom. So, Susie Olmos Soto, Mary Ann Kellam and I went in search of the magic as fellows of MANA’s Avanzamos Leadership training in Orlando, Florida. One of the biggest discoveries was the $5,000 dollar Gallup University Strengths Finder evaluation we received for free. We learned the 34 themes of talent that everyone has, and studied the top five signature themes that are the most dominant in our own lives. We received a list of all of our strengths in order, but remaining true to the Gallup theory we focus on our strengths and manage the weaknesses. Needless to say, we found our pixie dust.
The Gallup Organization suggests that to be the most effective in your career, daily life, and family you must understand your strengths and their behaviors. A true understanding of our past success is a culmination of maximizing those top 5 strengths. Connie Moya from Gallup showed us how to use our strengths within a team and meet the four basic needs of all followers: trust, compassion, stability, and hope. (as identified from a Gallup poll of 10,000 followers)
Using my new skills, I evaluated our own HWNT_FW Chapter. Granted a chapter can’t take the test, but I took the role of the self-taught unofficial Gallup evaluator.

1. Woo -We love the challenge of meeting new people and winning them over. We derive satisfaction from breaking the ice and making a connection with another person. In our world there are no strangers, only friends we haven’t met yet — lots of them. We are a rare breed as most do not have Woo high on their list of strengths….and yes we say “WOO”. Chapter Woo’s: Eva Bonilla FW and Mary Ann Kellam Dallas

2. Maximizer - We focus on strengths as a way to stimulate personal and group excellence. We seek to transform something strong into something superb.

3. Arranger- We organize, but we also have a flexibility that complements this ability. We like to figure out how all of the pieces and resources can be arranged for maximum productivity.

4. Developer- We recognize and cultivate the potential in others. We spot the signs of each small improvement and derive satisfaction from these improvements.

5. Positivity- We have an enthusiasm that is contagious. We are upbeat and can get others excited about what we are going to do. Positivity and Woo as a top five are even more rare…just ask Mary Ann Kellam and Eva Bonilla.

6. Relator- We enjoy close relationships with others. We find deep satisfaction in working hard with friends to achieve a goal.

7. Futuristic- We are inspired by the future and what could be. We inspire others with our vision of the future.

8. Context- We enjoy thinking about the past. We understand the present by researching the history.

9. Achiever- We have a great deal of stamina and work hard. We take great satisfaction from being productive

10. Activator- We make things happen by turning thoughts into action. We are often impatient.

As a chapter of 113 fabulous members, our top five is really a top ten. Our strengths are fierce and at any given moment our membership brings all of the 34 strengths to the table. So, I may not have Woo but the HWNT_FW chapter certainly does.

Here are the strengths of some of our chapter members that received the Strengths Finder Analysis:

HWNT FW Chapter: Remembering our mother, Mary Holguin Alva

June 9th, 2009
Comments Off

Mary Holguin Alva

Mother of Pat Alva Green

When the Fort Worth Chapter of the Hispanic Women’s Network of Texas honored their Latinas In Progress students, Patricia Alva Green honored the life of her mother.

Mary Holguin Alva was born and raised in El Paso, TX. Mary lived a life of laughter, love and adventure. Always willing to try to something new, she learned from her experiences and readily encouraged others to “step out”. Her dynamic personality lit up a room and people loved to be around her. Mary was a wonderful mom, loving wife, supportive sister and a loyal friend. Her many friends looked to her for advice and encouragement. She cared deeply, gave generously and lived life fully. She raised five like-minded children. As a stay at home mom, Mary was very involved with her children’s activities. She became a second mom to many of her children’s friends. Mary always advised those around her to enjoy life and make the most of it. Mary certainly did.

Darcee Torres of Paschal High School won the $1,000 Mary Holguin Alva scholarship at the HWNT FW Mother Daughter Banquet.

Busness conecctions logoIn order to celebrate April as the Financial Literacy Month, our La Vida de la Mujer Development Series featured Idolina Shumway, a dynamic and highly respected Certified Financial Planner with New England Financial.  Her presentation was extremely informative and filled with great real life examples that allowed us to easily connect with the speaker as well as gain a deeper understanding of the importance of taking control of our finances. It was a very informative presentation and we thank Idolina for joining us and sharing her knowledge!  Our evening ended with our monthly raffles benefiting our Education Seminar Series Scholarship Fund.
